When we reflect on the development of automation testing, a clear change can be seen. Teams began with simple UI scripts and large frameworks, which were difficult to keep up with. As time passed, automation started becoming more included in development processes, CI/CD pipelines, and regular engineering activities.

But currently, AI is not in the stage of experimentation anymore, but is becoming practical enough to employ in real undertakings. The periods between new releases are becoming shorter, at times being measured in days or even hours. Additionally, modern architectures such as microservices and cloud platforms make systems difficult to examine using older methods. In this article, we identify new trends in software testing.

Trend #1: Agentic AI and Autonomous Testing

For the last couple of years, everyone has been talking about generative AI in testing. Tools that help write test code, suggest assertions, or generate test data. Now we’re seeing a bigger shift in testing trends: from generative AI to agentic AI, where AI doesn’t just make suggestions, but actually takes action.

So what does that mean in practice? Imagine an AI agent that can read a ticket in Jira, understand what has changed in the system, and decide what needs to be tested. Not just generating a test, but choosing the right level – API, UI, or integration – then running these tests and reporting the results. All of this can happen without a tester manually writing or triggering anything.

One of the new testing trends is that we don’t write endless scenarios anymore but define goals, rules, and boundaries for these agents. We decide what “good coverage” means, what risks matter most, and where the AI is allowed to act on its own (and where it must stop and ask for human input). In other words, testers become organizers and supervisors of autonomous systems.

Trend #2: Quality Observability and the Shift Right

In 2026, testing doesn’t stop when the release goes live. In fact, that’s often where the most valuable testing begins. More teams are moving toward what we can call quality observability – a shift-right approach where real user behavior becomes a direct input for automation.

One of the latest testing trends is how production data is used. Teams connect real user monitoring (RUM) with their automated test suites. This means QA is no longer guessing which scenarios matter most. You see exactly how users interact with the system, where they struggle, and where things break under real conditions.

For instance, a user hits an error during checkout in production. The system captures the session: browser, device, steps taken, network calls, and error details. Based on this data, an automated test case is created that reproduces the exact problem. That test is then added to the regression suite and runs automatically in the next build.

This is the point where the distance between monitoring tools and test automation begins to diminish. Platforms such as Datadog and Splunk have much knowledge about what occurs in production. On the testing side, Selenium and Playwright have the ability to consistently replicate user flows.

For testers, this means spending less time inventing hypothetical scenarios and more time validating real ones.

Trend #3: Testing AI-Generated Code

AI now not only assists developers in coding but also writes a significant portion of it within many teams. Tools such as GitHub Copilot allow developers to produce substantial amounts of ready-to-use code very quickly. In certain projects, the majority of new code is generated by tools supplemented with AI assistance. That appears excellent for the development speed, but it brings a genuine problem to quality assurance and, thus, also impacts the future of test automation.

The issue is not that AI-created code is chaotic or hard to read. It’s actually the contrary. Frequently, it appears neat, well-organized, and can pass basic inspections without problems. The true danger is more nuanced. AI has the capability to bring in minor logical errors, wrong assumptions, or security gaps that are difficult to notice during code inspections. All things compile correctly, and tests may show positive results, but there could be slight or even dangerous misbehaviors in edge cases.

This is the point where a testing method native to AI comes into play. Teams are beginning to use automation testing tools that aim specifically at catching failures characteristic of AI. These might be, for example, tests that thoroughly investigate boundary conditions, unforeseen inputs, and rare execution routes. Or tests concentrating on security that search for mistakes AI models usually make, like wrong validation or risky defaults.

A basic example: an API handler created by AI may do well in handling regular requests, but could struggle when optional fields are absent or mixed together in unusual ways. These aren’t accidental glitches but consistent areas of oversight. Automated test suites that are carefully designed can focus on these vulnerable spots and reveal problems much earlier than users detect them.

Trend #4: Synthetic Test Data at Scale

Copying user data into test environments, even when masked, is becoming too risky from both legal and ethical perspectives.

The challenge is obvious: without real data, how do you test real-world behavior? The answer is synthetic data, but not the old, simplistic kind. What’s new is the use of AI models that can generate mathematically equivalent synthetic datasets. These datasets behave like production data from a statistical and logical point of view, without containing any real personal information.

For example, you can generate thousands of edge cases that barely exist in production data, like rare payment failures, unusual user behavior patterns, or complex fraud scenarios. These are exactly the situations that often cause serious incidents, yet they’re almost impossible to test if you rely only on historical data.

Another big advantage is scale. With AI-generated synthetic data, you’re not limited by what users happened to do in the past. You can stress-test systems with extreme loads, unusual combinations of inputs, or long-tail scenarios that would take years to appear naturally. And you can do this safely, repeatedly, and automatically.

Trend #5: Beyond the Web: Testing AI in IoT and Physical Systems

Automation testing is no longer limited to web apps and APIs. We’ve moved into the world of physical AI – smart devices, robots, sensors, edge computing, and industrial systems where software decisions affect physical processes.

This changes the testing approaches, too. When you’re testing an IoT device or an AI-driven machine, a bug doesn’t just mean a broken screen or a failed request. It can mean incorrect sensor readings, delayed reactions, or unsafe behavior. Traditional automation tools simply aren’t enough here.

One latest trend making this space more realistic for QA teams is the wider adoption of Hardware-in-the-Loop (HiL) testing. HiL setups connect real or simulated hardware to automated tests. This allows teams to verify how software behaves under real-world conditions without needing a full physical lab.

What’s new is accessibility. HiL used to be expensive and limited to highly specialized teams. Now, cloud-based device farms are changing that. Platforms like BrowserStack and similar services make it possible to test across real devices, embedded systems, and edge environments remotely. QA teams can run automated tests against physical devices without owning or maintaining the hardware themselves.
